Equations

The instructions on this page assume that you are in the cell where you want the equation or function to be applied.

Working with equations
Outcome Keyboard Dragon command
Sum
  1. Alt
  2. M to open the Formulas ribbon
  3. U to open the AutoSum menu
  4. S to select Sum
  5. If you need to edit the formula, Ctrl + F2 moves the focus to the formula bar.
  1. AutoSum to open the AutoSum menu
  2. Press enter to select Sum
  3. If you need to edit the formula, Press control F2 moves the focus to the formula bar.
Average
  1. Alt
  2. M to open the Formulas ribbon
  3. U to open the AutoSum menu
  4. A to select Average
  5. If you need to edit the formula, Ctrl + F2 moves the focus to the formula bar.

  2. Go down to move the focus to Average
  3. Press enter to select Average
  4. If you need to edit the formula, Press control F2 moves the focus to the formula bar.

Functions

There are so many different functions in Excel, it probably wouldn't be helpful to give instructions for all of them. The following table gives instructions for IF and COUNTIF. All functions are input in much the same way though, so you can apply the keyboard and Dragon techniques to other functions.

  3. F to open the Insert Function dialogue
  4. Tab x 3 to go to the Select a function list
  5. to select IF
  6. Enter to open the Function Arguments dialogue
  7. Type in logical test, e.g. [cell ref]="value"
  8. Tab to move to the Value_if_true field
  9. Type in the value you want returned if the condition is true (in quotes)
  10. Tab to move to the Value_if_false field
  11. Type in the value you want returned if the condition is false (in quotes)
  12. Enter
  1. Insert function to open the Insert Function dialogue
  2. Tab 3 times to go to the Select a function list
  3. Go down to select COUNTIF
  4. OK to open the Function Arguments dialogue
  5. Spell mode on and dictate logical test, e.g. [cell ref]="value"
  6. Tab to move to the Value_if_true field
  7. Dictate the value you want returned if the condition is true (in quotes)
  8. Tab to move to the Value_if_false field
  9. Dictate the value you want returned if the condition is false (in quotes)
  10. OK
COUNTIF
  1. Alt
  2. M to open the Formulas ribbon
  3. F to open the Insert Function dialogue
  4. Tab x 3 to go to the Select a function list
  5. to select COUNTIF
  6. Enter to open the Function Arguments dialogue
  7. Type in the range in the format A3:A10
  8. Tab to move to the Criteria field
  9. Type in the value that you want to count
  10. Enter to apply
  1. Insert function to open the Insert Function dialogue
  2. Tab 3 times to go to the Select a function list
  3. Go down to select COUNTIF
  4. OK to open the Function Arguments dialogue
  5. Spell mode on and then dictate the range in the format A3:A10
  6. Tab to move to the Criteria field
  7. Dictate the value that you want to count
  8. OK to apply
